What do you know about the chakras? Have you heard the term in yoga class or when listening to a guided meditation, but not really understood them. Maybe you know that they are the 7 main energy centers in your body. You’ve been told there is a color and specific energy that connects to each center, but that’s the limit of your knowledge.

I get it, they can be a little confusing. It’s taken me years of study to connect in a way that what color I wear supports me, the foods I eat or yoga poses I practice support the energy I’m seeking for the day.

Until the last few years the chakras were something I thought about in meditation, when I was playing with crystals, but not when I was asking my guides for support in my day. I started really noticing the energy of the earth, society and myself. I realized that each decade the world seems to be processing through the earth’s chakras. I started to connect that my years were being led by the theme of a chakra and its energy.

That piqued my interest. It got me paying attention.

I decided to dedicate a series of blogs and podcasts to share with you what I have learned along the way.

Let’s start with the basics –

Chakra means wheel in sanskrit. The exact number of chakras and energy centers in your body is based on which school of thought you connect with, but somewhere between 7-114. Chakras are referenced in ancient teachings from Hindu, Indian, Chinese, TIbetan and Japanese religions.

 You may have also heard them in reference to the nadis. The Nadis are the channels which your energy flows throughout your body, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

 For this series and basically not to overwhelm you let’s just focus on the 7 main chakras – root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras. I’ll dive into the color and meaning of each chakra in future blogs and on my podcast Grounding Journey. For this post I just want to explain the basics of chakras.

To give you a visual, imagine a rod of light going from the tip of your head out through your perineum. Along the rod of light are the 7 chakras. When the chakras are clear and flowing energy is able to flow in and out of your body fairly undisturbed. The energy I am referring to is Mother Earth energy coming in through your feet and perineum (root) and source energy entering at the top of your head (crown).

The energy from Mother Earth and Source is what connects me to my passion, keeps me grounded and centered.

You’ll hear chakra work often referred to as balancing your chakras. I read somewhere along the way that it is not the point to have them balanced, but more importantly unblocked and clear. This resonated so much deeper for me. It is my personal experience that we place so much pressure on being balanced and can often throw ourselves off by striving to balance.

When energy is blocking or stagnant in one of the energy centers, Energy from Mother Earth and Source can’t flow freely in your body.

For me, clearing my chakras is the simplest form of letting go and releasing.

 Another term I put too much pressure on myself is “letting go” What exactly does that mean? How do I do it? How do I know when I have let go?

I’ve learned through my own personal chakra deep dive that letting go of that which no longer serves me is so much easier than letting go of an experience or situation. I have found that we experience each event we do to help us along our journey to guide us, to teach us who we want to be, who we don’t want to be, how we want to behave and how we want to grow.

Even the tough things are here to teach us something, painfully, but teach us nonetheless. If we haven’t learned what we are supposed to from the experience we are destined to repeat the lesson. When we “hold on to it” we are not allowing ourselves to grow. Moving the energy through my body is how I keep it from getting stuck in my energy center and staying longer than it should. I love to use yoga and dance to move energy through my body.

 I find after a particularly powerful meditation the best release for me is to pop on my favorite song and dance it out – Right now my favorite for the purpose is Adventure of Me by Rob Riccardo – (check it out if you haven’t!!!)

 A yin yoga practice is another favorite way of mine to release energy and get it flowing again. Ever held pigeon pose for 4-5 mins? You’ll clear blocks in your root chakra for sure!

Back to my point – instead of pressuring myself to “let it go” I focus on releasing that which no longer serves me. Meaning It’s here and moving throughout my body until I learn the lesson from it instead of becoming stagnant energy in one of my chakras and creating more difficulties along the way or being released too soon and me having to repeat it again.

 Make sense?

Whether chakra work is new to you or you’re ready to take it to the next level color plays a significant part in the work. Clearing blocks can be as simple as wearing a red shirt when you’re feeling a little ungrounded or eating fresh green vegi’s when you feel heartache. 

What I love about chakra work is it’s based on intention and action. Setting the intention to release through energy work and moving your body. It doesn’t require lots of replaying an event in your head over and over again or years of therapy. It’s something you can do by connecting deeper with your soul. It’s my intention to share my experience, strength and hope I have learned through my chakra journey with you.
