The Importance of Energy Flow for Your Health and Well-being

Energy work has played a significant role in my life since my early 20s. Through the years, I have learned to identify when my energy is low and what is causing it to weigh me down. Time and practice have taught me multiple ways to raise my vibration. Each time I learn something new, I also raise my consciousness.

Energy work (specifically for me Reiki, yoga, meditation, and prayer) has allowed me the power to move from surviving to thriving. Learning about my energy and ways to work with it has given me the strength to find myself, my Dharma in life and align my heart and soul’s desires. Along the journey, I have found my self-worth, self-confidence, deep healing, and a new understanding of self-love.

We ARE energetic beings, and everything IS energy.

We have an invisible energy body (the subtle body) surrounding our physical body, made up of many layers. You may think of this as your aura.

Within your body are your chakras – In truth, there are chakra points in your body and your energy field (subtle body). We will focus on the 7 main chakras, which are energy points within your body.

Clearing the chakras allows you to increase your energy flow. The 7 main chakra points run down the center of your body— as you see in the photo here. When there is an energy block, the chakra point becomes a dam in your energy flow.

As I mentioned, many emotions and illnesses in the body can be caused by an imbalance of energy or a blocking of the flow of energy. In other words, a lack of flow in your energy eventually leads to dis-ease.

Here we have the basis of how energy affects your vibration. With attention and awareness, you won’t avoid dis-ease, but you can lessen the effect and length of time it lowers your body’s vibration.

So what causes an imbalance or block in the flow of energy?

Most people today have been conditioned to react to unpleasant experiences by blocking our feelings and emotions (shutting down), which stops a great deal of our natural energy flow.

An example of this is when a person is rejected/lied to or ignored many times when she tries to show her love to another, eventually feeling hurt, she stops trying. As a result, she closes down her heart (puts up walls), preventing energy from flowing through her heart chakra. The heart chakra becomes blocked when the energy flow is stopped or slowed down.

Eventually, a physical problem will likely result if the energy does not start to flow smoothly again. The dis-ease can show up as something little like heartburn or even worse.

Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women in America? In 2020, the American Heart Association reported that 1 in 5 women’s death was caused by heart disease. If you ask me, that’s a lot of broken hearts. I’m no doctor and am not trying to diagnose you, But the first time I heard someone say that it really got my attention and made me think.

This same process works for all the chakras; each chakra is tied to a different energy and part of your body.

Disrupted, weakened, or imbalances in the chakras become metaphorical dams to the flow of universal life force energy – Chi. These are just a few experiences that can cause energy flow to be interrupted in your body

  • emotional or physical trauma
  • injury
  • negative self-talk
  • toxicity (environmental or people)
  • nutritional depletion
  • destructive lifestyle and relationships (addiction)
  • neglect of self and lack of love for oneself or others
  • from emotions that are not expressed in a healthy way
  • childhood traumas
  • cultural conditioning
  • limited belief system

Difficulties abound in life for each one of us, and we develop coping strategies. If these difficulties persist, these coping strategies become learned behaviors and chronic patterns anchored in the body and psyche as defense structures. It is essential to recognize the blocks we carry, find and understand their source and do the work to release and heal our souls.

One of my favorite examples that I use repeatedly is the energy release that I experience in yoga. If you’ve ever been on your yoga mat and unexpectedly burst into tears or laughter, that’s an energy release.

Here's the thing.

You don’t heal from heartache the first time you sit with a new therapist. The same happens with yoga. You didn’t hit the mat for the very first time and get the pose perfect. It took time and practice for your body to know the movements and settle into the pose, just like talk therapy

When you are able to heal through understanding, it is possible to stop reacting to situations and experiences in the same way. While you may face the same problem again later, your response will be different because you have grown, peeled off a layer of the onion, and evolved to a new level of your true self.

Energy work is excellent for healing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual issues.

When you begin working through energy modalities to heal and release, you may experience a healing crisis because of the depth of the build-up. Please don’t let this scare you off from doing the work. This is the perfect opportunity for you to ask (or learn to ask) for help and support from someone.

Some of the health benefits of receiving energy healing:

  • Creates deep relaxation and aids the body in releasing stress and tension
  • It accelerates the body’s self-healing abilities
  • Aids better sleep
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Helps relieve pain
  • Removes energy blockages and adjusts the energy flow of the endocrine system bringing the body into balance and harmony
  • Assists the body in cleaning itself of toxins
  • Supports the immune system
  • Relaxes the nervous system
  • Increases vitality and postpones the aging process
  • Raises the vibrational frequency of the body
  • Helps spiritual growth and emotional clearing
  • And more!

Energy Healing works. It changes you from the inside out.

When energy healing and clearing becomes part of your regular practice you will more easily release and move through dis-ease.

Long-term practice of learning to take care of your whole-body energy means paying attention to your body, mind, and soul. By regularly focusing on giving your physical body what it needs, opening the energy channels, and allowing your soil to rest, you create the space for your body to deal properly and naturally with stress and the build-up of toxins.

The quantity and quality of your energy flow profoundly affects your emotions, thoughts, and reactions. Likewise, the quality of your relationships, productivity, creativity, and health depend upon creating a high level of harmoniously flowing energy.

Here’s a list of a few ways to address your whole body that you can use to maintain a healthy energy flow –

Proper Diet: Few of us realize the powerful effect of a good diet on our physical health and our emotional, mental, and spiritual states. A clean diet can create greater health, positive emotional states, clearer mental functioning, and increased spiritual attunement.

Vitamins: If you suspect your emotional state may be a result from a worn-down nervous system, you might benefit from a quality multivitamin and mineral supplement. I work with an amazing naturopath who helps me immensely!

Herbs and Flower Essence: Some herbs can be very calming and/or invigorating, offering an extra boost that may give us the needed optimism we need to make internal changes.

Daily Physical Exercise: We found this to be vital through our experiences with our son and his mental healthy journey. His therapist repeated this every session. The body is a living machine; like all machines, it needs to move, or it will begin to develop problems. Exercise is essential for a healthy muscular, skeletal, and circulatory system, a relaxed nervous system, and a balanced endocrine system.

On the holistic side of things regular and intentional movement also facilitates energy to flow through your body, giving momentum to your energy flow. This systemic harmony is necessary for emotional and mental peace.

Breathing Techniques: So many of us don’t actually breathe. We breathe shallowly, hold our breath in tough moments or just forget to breathe deep. Breathing exercises are one of the most effective ways to increase our energy level and keep it steady and harmonious, so we’re less susceptible to low emotional states or illness.

Healthy Sleep Routines: It’s a no-brainer, but in case you need the science behind it. This will calm the muscles, nerves, and all other bodily systems and thus rejuvenate the body and the mind. A regular good night’s sleep contributes to developing a strong and healthy immune system.

Meditation: Whether you meditate for 5 minutes or 45 minutes a day, it is effective for the mind and nervous system. Some days when I meditate I can go right to the place and space I seek.  Afterward, I find myself in a better space. Other times I’m more frustrated because my mind wouldn’t slow down. Meditation is a practice. Allow yourself grace for it to be magical and challenging.

If you struggle with meditation or are new to the practice, I’ve got ya! I created a special 4 part meditation series to help you!

When Meditation Doesn’t Work

What’s blocking you from meditating?

  • don’t have enough time
  • too busy
  • don’t know where to start
  • It just doesn’t work for me

What if it wasn’t you at all, instead what if your nervous system is overstimulated and needs a few baby steps to get started?

Rest and Relaxation: We’re not talking about sleep, but restorative practices like reading and walking. What do you love to do that fills your tank and allows you to feel restored. Even something you can do for 5 mins or 30 mins? Schedule time in your day to rejuvenate yourself. Make it a priority, something other than what you try to fit in.

Hands-on Healing: Shiatsu massage, polarity massage, spiritual healing, Reiki, and other such energy-oriented types of massage can be especially effective in relaxing the nervous system and reducing negativity.

Cleansing Techniques: One simple method is to increase the number of showers or baths. Contact with water can be healing and calming. Also, I’m a big fan of juicing when my energy feels low. A shower cleans your energy body and juicing cleanses the internal body.

Spiritual Practice: Each of us has a personal relationship with the Universe. Whether or not you adhere to any particular religion, Spirituality is different. It is vital for your inner balance that you feel and cultivate your relationship with the whole as humanity, as nature, or as Spirit.

Self Knowledge: Finding an understanding of your own inner self, needs, desires, fears, expectations, beliefs, and subconscious workings to free yourself from the negative emotions and patterns which undermine your health, happiness, and relationships.

Releasing Limiting Beliefs: This aspect of self-improvement usually requires an experienced professional who can help us reprogram the subconscious with positive, more objective beliefs and perceptions of ourselves, others, and the world.

I hope your takeaway from this is that body, mind, and soul, together with the energy body, are one indivisible whole. These simple, non-invasive healing practices work with your Higher Self to promote the health and well-being of the entire physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual body.

While I am a firm believer in energy work, please don’t let this sway you from seeking medical treatment if the case calls for it. It doesn’t have to be an either-or. It can be both.
